History & Heritage

Urana Shire is truly located in the Heart of the Plains and has a long and fascinating history.   Given the richness and diversity of the Shire’s history it is difficult to summarise the enumerable events in a few paragraphs.  That said, Mr. William A. Bayley was commissioned by the Council to write a history of the Shire, to coincide with the celebration of the Centenary of the Urana Township in 1959.

Entitled “Billabidgee  History of Urana Shire  Central Riverina New South Wales” Mr. Bayley succeeds in presenting a compelling appreciation of the region’s past and helps us understand why Council adopted the aspirational theme “Going Forward With Pride.”

Read excerpts of the book, specifically chapter 6 “Heart of the Plains” and the Foreword written by the Shire President at the time Cr. J. M. Smith, along with a short history of the Urana Court House Museum.
