 Urana, in the middle of everywhere!
The Urana Shire is centrally located right in the heart of the beautiful Riverina and is some 3,361 sq. kms in area. Supporting a population of 1500 people, the Shire consists of five townships each of which boast obvious rural charm.
Urana Shire is well positioned about 110 kms from both the major NSW regional centres of Albury and Wagga Wagga and maintains a network of over 1,000 kms of roads within the Shire.
A recent review carried out by representatives of the Department of Local Government found the Shire Council is well governed and administered and is progressive and outcome focused.
The towns within the Shire feature a number of attractions which are well worth visiting when you have the opportunity including;
- Urana
Urana is developing as a prominent area for aquatic sports, camping, fishing, arts and crafts. The Urana Aquatic Centre provides excellent amenities for camping, water skiing, fishing, bushwalking or just relaxation. The Aquatic Centre also incorporates a Caravan Park, with modern amenities and barbeque facilities.
The Urana Court House Museum is also worth a visit and has on display many items of historical value to the Urana Shire and also hosts acclaimed art exhibitions.
- Oaklands
Oaklands is particularly renowned for its Vintage Machinery Museum, which features displays of vintage farm machinery. The museum is open seven days a week.
- Morundah
Morundah is adjacent to the Newell Highway between Jerilderie and Narrandera and features an outstanding restaurant at the Morundah Hotel. The restaurant recently received praise in the “Epicure” section of the Melbourne Age and is a ‘must do’ when visiting.
- And don’t forget
Boree Creek which is situated in the centre of a rich agricultural area and midway between Narrandera and Lockhart, while Rand is the southern gateway to the Shire just forty minutes from Albury.
The Urana Shire offers both residents and visitors a wide range of facilities including Pre-School, Multi Purpose Centre, Day Care Centre, Hospital and Aged Care Hostel, Doctor's Surgery, Golf Course, Swimming Pool, Football, Cricket, Tennis, Licensed Bowling Club, Catholic Primary School, State Central School, Anglican, Catholic and Uniting Churches.
The Urana Shire is within comfortable driving distance of the wineries at Corowa and Rutherglen and both the Victorian and New South Wales snowfields and is only 4 hours from Melbourne.
