Council & Services
With 2006 having marked the centenary of the proclamation of Urana Shire as a local government area, Council now looks forward to living by its motto for the next 100 years. "Going Forward With Pride" is not simply a catchy phrase, it is the standard by which the elected representatives, executive management and staff of Urana Shire Council measure their progress.
With its headquarters located in the long-established township of Urana, the first Council - made up of five temporarily-appointed councillors - held its first meeting in June, 1906.
A poll to elect six permanent councillors was held in November of 1906, with five of the six available positions (two from each of three ridings) being filled. The sixth position was later filled by way of an extraordinary election.
The first meeting of the elected council was held on 5th December 1906, at which time the first Shire President, Dr Macknight, was elected.
Urana township, which is centrally located in the Shire, has remained the seat of governance for the Urana Shire since those early days. There are now nine councillors representing those same three ridings (now referred to as wards), providing a more equitable decision-making balance in Council. Now, as was the case 100 years ago, the Mayor is elected by the councillors.
