Urana Shire is represented by nine (9) Councillors, each of whom is elected by the residents of the Shire. The Mayor and Deputy Mayor are elected by the Councillors in September each year. The term of office is currently four (4) years, with the last delayed election having been held in March, 2004. The next election of Councillors will take place in September, 2008. Council is responsible for making policy decisions concerning Council activities and for determining the strategic direction of the Council.

Local Government is often called "the third sphere" of Government in Australia. It is an elected system of Government directly accountable to the local community. Each Council is an independent, statutory corporation responsible for administering the Local Government area over which it has jurisdiction.

Leadership of Councils is provided by "the Council". This is all of the elected representatives, or Councillors, who work together to provide good governance for the benefit of their local community.
