Economic Development and Tourism

Urana Shire Council is committed to the promotion of both Economic Development and Tourism within the Shire by focussing its efforts on encouraging private sector development initiatives.

To provide greater opportunity for private sector development within the Shire, Council has undertaken a comprehensive review of Council and Crown lands within the Shire to provide opportunities for growth in the commercial, residential and industrial sectors.

Recent examples of Council support is the establishment of the Pentarch operation at Oaklands, which now employs 20 full and part time staff members and the pro-active approach taken by Council to the proposal to establish an Ethanol Plant in the Shire.

Council has had a direct role in encouraging development within the Shire with the expansion of cabin accommodation at the Urana Caravan Park and the support of special events including the Urana Tractor Pull and Opera performances in the Paradise Palladium Theatre in Morundah.  The Paradise Palladium Theatre project was subsequently awarded the People’s Choice Award in the Local Government Cultural Awards for 2008, presented at Parliament House in Sydney.

Council commissioned a Strategic Plan for 2006-2015 which identified both a Statement of Purpose and Vision of the Council to set about achieving the economic well-being and quality of life of Shire residents.

The Strategic Plan also identified the specific goals and strategy to support Councils overall objective of achieving measurable and sustainable social and economic growth within the Shire.
