Roads and Streets
The major arterial link between Melbourne and Brisbane is the Newell Highway, 43 km of which passes through the north west of the Urana Shire. This highway is owned, maintained and operated solely by the NSW Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA). Any enquiries regarding the Newell Highway should be forwarded directly to the RTA’s South Western region located in Wagga.
Urana Shire Council maintains a road network consisting of 1081 kms throughout the Shire. Of this, 217kms are defined as regional main roads which were handed over to the Council from the State Government in 1993.These roads provide most of the strategic arterial road transport links with centres outside the Shire.
The majority of these roads are sealed, however Mahonga Rd (MR125) is only partially sealed between Rand and Urana, although an alternative sealed route is provided through Bidgeemia.
Council also maintains a local road network of 864 km of which 227km is sealed. The remaining roads are gravel or dry weather only.
Council priorities have been to protect and maintain the existing road network in good condition which involves an extensive program of grading, heavy patching, resheeting and resealing. Any new development of the road network has been generally limited to widening narrow sections of the sealed roads.
Contact Council on (02) 6930-9100 during business hours for more information on the road system in the Urana Shire. Alternatively click here if you would prefer to email your enquiry.
